Adaptive Scoring - How It Works

The new digital SAT introduces an adaptive testing model while maintaining the same content and skills assessment as the traditional SAT. In this model, the difficulty of questions in the second module adapts based on the test-taker's performance in the first module, influencing scoring. Answering more difficult questions correctly leads to a higher score.

This means that if a student does not do well on the first module of a section, the difficulty of the second module will be reduced and it will be practically impossible for the student to achieve a high score, even if the student correctly answers every question in the second module.

Score Ranges and Scaling

The scoring range on the digital SAT remains comparable to the traditional SAT, with scores ranging from 400 to 1600. However, the Reading and Writing sections are now combined, and the Math section allows calculators throughout.

The scoring process involves converting raw scores (one point per correct answer, with no penalty for wrong answers) to scaled scores.

There is no universal scaling algorithm - every exam has it's own scaling based on each question's difficulty. Generally speaking, though, getting a difficult question wrong is penalized less than getting an easy question wrong.

Hello Dr. Li,

I hope this finds you well. I just wanted to let you know that your summer SAT program was incredibly helpful and I wouldn’t have gotten a 1570 in October without it. The math lessons were especially useful as they taught me how to work quickly and efficiently and maximize my time for checking answers, helping me score 800 on the math section. The writing and reading lessons exposed me to the types of questions on the test and prepared me for answering them in a timely manner. Thank you so much for your help and please share my appreciation with all of the teachers!

Best regards,
