First Paper Assignment

Identify FOUR themes shared among the three following REQUIRED texts:

• F. A. Hayek’s The Road to Serfdom:  The Definitive Edition (2007)
• Milton and Rose Friedman’s Free to Choose: A Personal Statement (1990)
• Thomas Sowell’s Basic Economics:  A Common Sense Guide to the Economy, Fifth Edition (2015)

How does each author develop each theme, and how does he connect them?

Please be sure to cite all page references to these texts parenthetically.  Also, feel free to consult and cite other sources, such as Wikipedia, as appropriate.

Length of paper:  6-10 double-spaced, typed pages.  Please print out sufficient copies for yourself, Dr. Thomson, and the other members of the class.

Papers are to be placed on Dr. Thomson’s desk by 12:00 noon, 7 August, 2019.  Individual appointment (1 hr) will be scheduled in the order of the receipt of the paper.

Second Paper Assignment

Choose THREE of Mark Helprin’s pieces in his The Pacific and Other Stories  (2005).  Identify in each one 2-4 examples of Helprin’s style and diction which you found to be exceptionally vivid, compelling, or memorable:  Why did those passages particularly affect you as they did?

Length of paper:  2-3 double-spaced, typed pages.  Please print out sufficient copies for yourself, Dr. Thomson, and the other members of the class.
