Middle School Reading

Most Recommended Middle School Reading List for Advanced Students

  1. Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury (A book about books being illegal. Dystopian, and hard to put down.)
  2. To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee (A woman from the south remembers her funny and interesting childhood.)
  3. The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald (A shorter book, but pretty challenging. Also, one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read)
  4. 1984, George Orwell (Dystopian and powerful. The government watches everything you do and destroys any sense of freedom. Incredibly memorable.)
  5. One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Ken Kesey (Written through the perspective of a man in a mental institution, it’s as strange and fascinating as it sounds.)
  6. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen (A funny and sharp look at how two people, who might not like each other at all, might just like each other a little bit. Hard to read at first, but once you understand the tone, it’s impossible to put down.)
  7. The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde (Wilde is famous for his quirky and funny sayings, and this play is full of them. Truly, a delightful read.)
  8. Emma, Jane Austen (Not too different from Pride and Prejudice; just as compelling.)
  9. The Diary of a Young Girl, Anne Frank (Anne reflects on her time hiding in her secret room, scared to death of the Nazi soldiers she could hear outside looking for her.)
  10. The Hobbit, J. R. R. Tolkein (It’s better than the movie. And it might get you into the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, a worthy—though time-consuming—read.)
